Explore the Hidden Gems of New Jersey
New Jersey is home to a variety of unique attractions that offer something for everyone. From charming animal sanctuaries to historic landmarks and whimsical art installations, the Garden State is full of surprises. I love to plan day trips, here are a few for you to check out:
1. Jersey Shore Alpacas
Located in Cape May, Jersey Shore Alpacas is a delightful farm where you can meet and interact with friendly alpacas.
2. Lakota Wolf Preserve
The Lakota Wolf Preserve in Columbia is a sanctuary for wolves, bobcats, foxes, and lynx. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about these magnificent animals and observe them in their natural habitats. Visiting the preserve is a family favorite and a memorable experience. After your visit, stop at Hot Dog Johnny’s, a nostalgic roadside stand in Buttzville.
3. Lucy the Elephant
Lucy the Elephant is a six-story high National Historic Landmark in Margate City. Built in 1882, this elephant-shaped building has served various purposes over the years, including a tavern and a summer home. We enjoyed the inside tour and the panoramic views from the observation deck.
4. Grounds For Sculpture
Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton is a 42-acre sculpture park and museum that features over 270 contemporary sculptures. The beautifully landscaped grounds provide a serene setting for art lovers to explore and appreciate the diverse collection. I suggest going with friends! After spending time exploring the park, enjoy dining together at Rat’s Restaurant.
5. The Raptor Trust
Located in Millington, The Raptor Trust is a bird rehabilitation center dedicated to the care and conservation of wild birds. Visitors can take self-guided tours to see hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls housed in aviaries and learn more about wildlife conservation.
6. Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park
Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park in Paterson is home to the impressive Great Falls of the Passaic River. The Great Falls are the 2nd largest waterfall, by volume, east of the Mississippi River (behind Niagara). This site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
7. Popcorn Park Animal Refuge
Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Forked River is a sanctuary for abandoned, abused or injured animals including exotics, wildlife, farm animals and birds. You can see tigers, cougars, a lion, bears, monkeys, deer, reptiles, bobcats, horses, goats and more in a safe habitat operated by the Associated Humane Societies.
8. Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal
The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, also known as Communipaw Terminal, is a historic landmark located in Liberty State Park, Jersey City. Built in 1889, the terminal was once a bustling transportation hub. Today, it serves as a gateway for visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island!
9. Big Rusty the Troll
Big Rusty is a giant troll sculpture located in Hainesport. Made from recycled materials, Big Rusty is part of the Burlington County Troll Trek, an art exhibition that includes 19 troll sculptures located throughout the county.
10. The Ghost Tracks of Cape May
Several times a year, visitors to Sunset Beach in Cape May can view tracks that have been beneath the sand for decades. They are referred to as the mysterious, historic “Ghost Tracks” when they emerge from the ocean during low tide . These century-old railroad tracks, dating back to the early 1900s, were once used for sand mining and munitions testing.
